Equine Nutrition – Ration Formulation for Horses

Spread the love

Equine nutrition and ration formulation for your horse is not as simple as it seems. There are ample feed products on the market for all sorts of activities your horse is engaged in and it can be confusing choosing the right ones. I can help you formulate the right diet for your horse by applying scientifically-proven equine nutrition principles for your horse’s life stage, environment and activity. These equine nutrition principles are important because they have been tested and verified scientifically and are not based on folklore, personal beliefs or other doctrines. This means that you can rest assured your horse will receive the right amount of nutrients he requires, but also the right ingredients for his well-being. When horses receive the right amount of nutrients for their age, weight and level of activity, they perform better but mostly, they are healthier and will tend to recover quickly from illness. Healthy horses are happy horses!

PS: I am not affiliated with any feed company so I cannot be swayed to use a particular brand or product.

Why is it important to have the right ration and nutrition?

Horses need a minimum amount of certain nutrients to be healthy. These amounts vary depending on the horse’s activity, their age, whether they are breeding and their environment. To some extent, their breed will also play a role in their requirements. As horses become more involved in sports and become athletes, their requirements increase considerably. A broodmare, a mare with foal, a foal or a stallion will require a different amount of nutrients than an adult horse at rest. When horses’ nutritional requirements are not met, they may develop illnesses like laminitis, “Big Head”, wounds may be slow to heal or they catch a cold easily. They also most likely have a rough dull coat, be in poor condition, have bad hooves, snotty noses and so on.
